Submissions Guidelines for For Sappho’s Sake
Thank you for your interest in submitting to For Sappho’s Sake! We are excited to showcase the incredible creativity of the lesbian community. Please review the guidelines below before sending in your work.
Who Can Submit
For Sappho’s Sake exclusively publishes work by lesbians. While we welcome readers and supporters of all backgrounds, submissions are reserved for lesbians only.
Submission Requirements
- Format:
- Submissions must be in a Word document (.doc or .docx) format. We do not accept PDFs.
- Use 12pt Times New Roman font.
- Leave all identifying information (name, bio, etc.) off the document itself to allow for blind review.
- Written Work:
- Up to 5 poems (included in a single document, with each poem starting on a new page).
- Up to 2 short stories or essays.
- OR 1 longer piece of up to 5,000 words.
- Book Reviews: We accept reviews of books written by lesbians only.
- Visual Art and Photography: Must be high-resolution and of professional quality.
- No AI-Generated Work: All submissions must be original and created entirely by the contributor. AI-generated or AI-assisted work will not be accepted.
Content Notes
Submissions may be in any style, form, or combination of forms. While your work does not need to focus on lesbian themes or experiences, all submissions must be created by lesbians.
Simultaneous Submissions
We accept and encourage simultaneous submissions. However, please notify us immediately if a piece submitted to For Sappho’s Sake is accepted elsewhere so we can adjust accordingly.
Publication Rights
For Sappho’s Sake acquires first North American serial rights for all accepted work. This means that your submission must not have been published previously in North America, including in journals, books, online platforms, or other publications. In rare cases, we may consider reprinting previously published work, but this must be discussed with the editor prior to submission.
How to Submit
- Email your submission to forsapphosake@gmail.com.
- Use the subject line: SUBMISSION—Your Name.
- Include your full name and a brief bio in the body of the email. Pseudonyms are acceptable.
Compensation
At this time, we are unable to pay contributors. However, each contributor will receive a free digital copy and the opportunity to purchase a copy of the finished journal at cost, plus shipping. Should future issues become financially viable, we will explore providing honorariums for contributors.
Deadlines
We accept submissions on a rolling basis. There is no fixed deadline—send your work whenever it’s ready!
